Morality in Literature MORALITY HAS ALWAYS BEEN a major preoccupation in fiction. It may be more obvious in the preaching that has occurred in novels where the writer addresses the reader directly, cautions against the seductive power of certain characters, makes judgments on the purity of spirit or egotistical selfishness of the characters. Sometimes writers put their moral views into the thoughts and speech of particularly sympathetic characters. But the main and more powerful vehicle for morality is plot.
